Description
Medieval monument of exceptional historical value, Neamţ Fortress or Neamţului Fortress is situated in the proximity of the highest altitude of Pleşu Peak. Watching over the valleys of Moldavia and Siret rivers, as well as over the access road to Transylvania, Neamţ Fortress has gone through many sieges and stands as a testimony of the historical turmoil which marked Moldavia during the Middle Ages.
Comissioned by Petru I Muşat (1374-1391), the fortress reached its full glory during the reign of Stephen the Great (1457-1504), due to numerous works of extension and consolidation. The edifice was declared a historic monument in 1866. The latest rehabilitation interventions on the building, carried out before 2009 and funded under the PHARE Program, have changed the look of the fortress, highlighting its magnificence and its tumultuous past, now presented to the public in an attractive manner.
